Eva Røyane and Oddleiv Apneseth have previously had great success with the books Noregs låver, Av stein and Klyngetunet. Now they have searched from Jæren to Sunnmøre for Vestland-farmhouses where people still live, and in some places children play on the loam.
In Vestlandshus. Farmhouses from Jæren to Sunnmøre they tell the story of the elongated, whitewashed farmhouse that, together with the usually red hayloft, had become a landmark and characteristic of Vestland farmsteads during the 19th century.
Over time, most of these characteristic buildings have been replaced by newer dwellings as the main house on the farm. The houses that remain today have very different appearances. Some have been standing for a long time without maintenance and are singing their last verse. Others have received the necessary maintenance and have changed little. Still others have been rebuilt both inside and out. In the book, Røyrane and Apneseth also show variations of the remaining Vestland-farmhouses where old building practices meet new architecture, and we get examples of how the traditional farmhouse can be adapted to today's needs and still be used as a year-round residence.
