The Fiddler from Korsneset

Karl Gustav Korsnes is 18 years old and the second oldest of his siblings. The family lives on Korsneset by Tafjorden, and runs a barren farm without electricity and running water where two families share the stove. They barely make ends meet by keeping goats. Music is often the only diversion in the heavy and hopeless everyday life on the farm. The men play homemade fiddles – all as one. They are well-known as fiddlers and are invited to parties, weddings and funerals.

Karl Gustav loves his fiddle and dreams of a future as a musician. When he enters King Oscar II's Guard in Kristiania, his dream seems to be coming true. But after his eldest brother renounces the nobility, Karl Gustav must take over the barren farm on Korsneset.

The Fiddler from Korsneset by Gro Nilsdatter Røsth is an easy-to-read historical novel, based on the life of Karl Gustav Karlsen Korsnes (1883–1942). He composed many songs throughout his life. The library in Valldal has 200 of his songs archived.

The novel is easy to read and adapted for an older target group, but can be read by a general reader. The events in the novel will trigger memories for those who have experienced similar things themselves, others will remember stories that they have been told. Many will recognize the difficult conditions of farming in the past.

The project has been developed in collaboration with and supported by Leser søker bok.

"The novel is written in poetic and clear language, and the text flows easily. The sentences are short and the font is larger than usual. But the novel is so rich and so compelling that it hits home with most readers."
